Is the VW Taigo bigger than the T-Cross? ›

The Taigo has arrived as Volkswagen's first coupe-styled SUV. It's slightly larger than the smaller T-Cross but is actually seen as the entry point to the firm's range of high-riding models.

Pricing starts at R429 900 for the Life model, while the midrange Style is yours for R464 100 and the range-topping R-Line will set you back by R486 000.

The model is produced in Pamplona, Spain. Like the Polo and T-Cross, the sporty new crossover will go on sale throughout Europe, with sales markets including 28 EU countries as well as South Africa and Turkey. In Brazil, the Taigo is offered and produced under the name of Nivus, with market-specific variations.

It's based on the MQB A0 platform that also underpins both the Polo and the T-Cross. It's not technically an all-new car either, because it shares a great deal with the Volkswagen Nivus sold in South America. To become a Taigo it gets a couple of styling tweaks inside and out as well as a new R-Line trim level.

The Taigo shares its mechanical make-up with the T-Cross crossover, so is based on the MQB A0 architecture that underpins cars such as the Polo supermini.

Sat nav and infotainment

If you opt for either Style or R-Line trim, you also get built-in sat-nav. The graphics are sharp and the system is quick to respond to your prods, even if you press lots of buttons in quick succession.

Worth noting that you get a manual handbrake in the Taigo too – useful for all those handbrake turns you'll be doing in your brand-new coupe.

Other options include heated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, keyless entry, a rear-view camera, a spare wheel and a Beats audio system.

The Kaluga plant is where local manufacturer GAZ builds the VW Polo, VW Tiguan and Skoda Rapid under licence, as well as assembling the Audi Q7 and Audi Q8 from knock-down kits and building petrol engines for various models.

Boot space

With the Taigo, you get a space of 438 litres in the boot, which only lags behind the T-Cross by five litres – which is pretty impressive considering the sloping roof.

Despite the mildly avant-garde exterior looks the Taigo is as conventional as it gets under the skin. It's closely-related to the T-Cross, of course, which means a compact range of petrol engines with manual or automatic gearboxes. You'll find no hybrid, plug-in hybrid or electric trickery here.

The new Volkswagen Taigo is available with a 1.5-litre petrol engine or two smaller 1.0-litre petrol engines, and in three trim levels: entry-level 'Life', sportier 'R-Line' and high-spec 'Style'.

Volkswagen Taigo / RRP

It's based on the Polo city car, and isn't much bigger in terms of nose-to-tail length (T-Cross: 4108mm; Polo: 4053mm). However the T-Cross is a taller, boxier design, and that means added practicality.

The T-Roc is the pricier of the two to buy outright, although the gap closes a little once you've factored in our Target Price discounts; you'll need an additional £2905 to put the T-Roc on your driveway.
