The best boxing gyms in London (1)

Boxing has experienced something of a resurgence in recent years with the likes of Anthony Joshua and Chris Eubank Jr becoming national celebrities.

But you needn't box professionally, or ever step in the ring at all, to experience the many benefits that boxing has to offer.

Having previously rounded up London's best MMA gyms, we've gone one better for boxing – exclusively photographing the finest gyms in the capital.

From Brixton to Islington, the City to Canning Town, these boxing gyms are spread across London; meaning wherever you live or work, there should be a boxing gym nearby.

Please note, these gyms are presented geographically – each gym is great and hopefully we have captured a little of their individual spirit.

We'll see you in the ring.Train well.

More than a century old, The Ring opened on 14 May 1910 on the site of a former chapel. More than 22,000 bouts were fought at The Ring before the boxing club was destroyed in an air raid in 1940. The Ring reopened in 2003 with a new, state-of-the-art gym capable of hosting its own White Collar Bouts, as well as being the venue for film shoots and private functions. (Anthony Joshua used The Ring for a recent product launch.)

BXR Londonis the capital's first luxury boxing gym. Endorsed by heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua, the state-of-the-art facilities include a boxing ring, all the equipment you will ever need, changing rooms that could moonlight as a hotel spa, a sauna and steam room, and even a lounge area complete with cafe. As you can see from the gallery above, the place looks a million dollars and cost a lot more than that to build.

A stylish gym with a massive heart, Manor has four branches: in Victoria, Marylebone, Old Street and Vauxhall. Victoria is the flagship, and offers a boxing ring – nice and cosy: no running in here – exercises bikes, punch bags and plenty more. There’s a backyard for the hardcore sessions – a lovely old-school touch from a very modern establishment. Manor has partnered with CALM for #StrongNotSilent – a campaign aimed at encouraging men to be more open about their mental health. It includes upcoming talks on ‘Relationships’ and ‘Vulnerability’, and a special Fight Night on 15 November.

Founded in 1974, Islington Boxing Club is situated right beside Elthorne Park, a great space for the pre-workout jog. The walls are decorated with murals of past greats, as well as newspaper clippings and posters from the club’s glory nights – plenty of motivation to go one extra round on the punchbags. In February 2010 the club was awarded the ‘Mayor’s Civic Award’ for its work in the community: proving the reach of a great boxing club extends far beyond the ring. There’s even a barbershop on the second floor!

The original Lodge was destroyed by a bomb in 1939 but the club found its new home in Lambeth Road in 1946. While primarily focused on the training of competitive boxers – both amateur and professional – Fitzroy Lodge also welcomes those looking for fitness benefits of boxing. The club is run by volunteers and supported by donations, grants and member subscriptions.

Founded as a charity in 1978, the Peacock Gym is renowned as a breeding ground for champion boxers, dating back to the likes of Lennox Lewis and Frank Bruno. Floyd Mayweather Jnr once trained at the Peacock. His verdict? “The place is top class, the people there know boxing and those fans were fantastic.” Beyond the boxing, the Peacock also houses a community café, dance studio, recording studio, and a hair and beauty salon. A bronze sculpture of Peacock boxer Bradley Stone, who passed away shortly after a British title fight, stands outside the gym with the inscription "He died in pursuit of his dreams."

Repton Boxing Club is an East London institution. As well as hundreds of national champions, including Olympic gold medalist Audley Harrison, Repton has trained the likes of actor Ray Winstone – a talented prospect in his day – and, most notoriously of all, the Kray twins. The club is the oldest in the UK – its precursor Repton Boys Club was established in 1884 – and head coach Tony Burns has been to ten Olympics in a career spanning half a century. Repton is for serious boxers only: no courses or keep-fit classes here.
